FIVE YEAR’S WORTH OF HMRC PENALTIES & INTEREST SUCCESSFULLY APPEALED

We recently assisted a new 80 year old client, who, due to ill health, had retired, but unfortunately due to his old accountant also being unwell, had five years of accounts and tax returns outstanding with HMRC.

Due to the above, HMRC had been imposing hefty penalties, which were now running at £50 per day.

Additionally, they were starting to threaten legal action and potential sequestration.

His business was that of a newsagent.

With the penalties running daily, the client’s age and the stress he was under, the team were able to fully complete, meet with the client and submit all outstanding returns within two weeks.

The end result was we were able to lodge appeals against all penalties and interest, which HMRC accepted for the entire five years.

The client received approx. £20,000 back from HMRC, which was a combination of interest and penalties overpaid.

He was absolutely delighted, not only with the outcome, but with the swift assistance he received.
